As I am sure most of you heard, on Wednesday I returned home from a tutoring gig at UCR to this life-changing (or perhaps life-affirming?) email:

"Dear Ms. Cunningham: (Now I can finally get to changing that name of mine...)

It
is my pleasure to inform you that you have been accepted as a student
in the Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies program at
Western University
of Health Sciences, College of Allied Health Professions."

.....

I was on the phone with Joseph at the time, who was driving to school, and I literally gasped once I realized the news was good. "What?!" he anxiously asked, thinking for a moment that something terrible had happened. "I got in!" I squealed, which he heard instead as "He got in". After clarifying that I was accepted to Western and NOT being attacked by an intruder, we immediately began phoning family- all those wonderful people who have given us their love and support. We feel so very blessed, and I still cannot believe in two short years I will be practicing medicine. (And I see this as further evidence that March is the best month of them all.)
WesternU is in the heart of Pomona, and is actually a converted 'open air mall' with a few additional buildings. Due to its location in the middle of a poor neighborhood, the college devotes much of its time reaching out to the community by providing healthcare to the under-served. We will probably be moving to Upland/Claremont/Ontario, which will put us closer to much of Joseph's side of the family (and closer to both of our schools). My white coat ceremony will be on August 10th, and we will begin courses the following week. Both of us are very excited to see begin this new part of our lives and move one step closer to 'real life'.
We would like to introduce those of you who can't visit our home to our baby girl, Creamsicle the comet goldfish. We brought her home a year and a half ago from a friend's booth at a UCR fair.

Back then she was about 1/4 her current size, but as a comet she can get up to 22 inches and live up to 30 years! Needless to say she outgrew her 10 gallon home this year, and we bought her and her danio buddies a 29 gallon tank.
She is the prettiest goldfish we have ever known, and gets compliments
whenever she's seen. She's a little fatty, who gets ecstatic when anyone
approaches her tank in the hopes they'll feed her. She can be finger fed, and
is currently having fun gobbling up the tank's new (expensive) plants.
Still, we love our big girl, and hope to put her in a pond someday when
we have a home. Look at that face- how can you not love her?
Fall quarter was an interesting one. I was lucky enough to get a job
working for the Health Professions Advising Center right after EMT
classes ended, and was able to finish her PA application. I have been
invited for an interview at WesternU in Pomona, and will be interviewing
on the 28th of January, bringing us one step closer to acceptance. My
employment ended in the middle of December, but I've been working on
finding a job that will put that EMT training to good use. Joseph had a
very difficult quarter, with courses that took up more time than he
could give while working part time. Lets just say he had a few 2am and
5am nights while trying to finish projects. Despite the difficulties, we
thoroughly enjoyed the fall holidays, as you can see in the barrage of pictures to follow (which will hopefully distract you from the obscene amount of time it took us to post to the blog).

I feel these next pictures warrant a bit more explanation. Over the summer, some friends informed us that they are annually part of a choir that participates in Disneyland's Candlelight Processional. This is a program put on by Disney for several (this year 20) nights in December, which features a celebrity host reading the biblical Christmas story accompanied by musical numbers provided by our volunteer choir. Having wanted to see the show myself, I was excited at the prospect of actually participating (the free ticket to come back to Disneyland later in the year didn't sway us either). We joined the choir and a few months later performed (only one show due to our work schedules). Needless to say it was NOT an easy experience ( I had some issues with my ears and air pressure during the show, while Joseph got a dead arm trying to hold his backpack inconspicuously), but it was a great adventure. Not sure with my school schedule if we can do it again next year, but some day we hope to return again.

This summer we enjoyed a great mini-vacation visiting San Diego. We started in Escondido visiting our other set of amazing grandparents who took us on an adventure to the San Diego Wild Animal Park. The weather was beautifully gloomy (which was great in the middle of the summer), and we had great fun getting attacked by lorikeets (Joseph had no idea what he was in for). The next day, we went into the city to hang out with the Humphreys, who kindly showed us around their favorite spots out in La Jolla with their cute little girl Cora. We were lucky to have their air conditioned car, because the rainy weather left behind the hottest, most humid day of the summer. After a day of riding about, we settled down to a super tasty dinner in old town and sealed our summer with a great trip.

{Attack of the lorikeets, Joseph's first time- bwahaha!}

I'd been putting off blogging due to our SLOW internet resisting my attempts to upload images, but after much prodding by Joseph, we upgraded. YAY! I will also blame school, busy busy school, but once again everything turned out great for us grade-wise, so no more worries there. Christmas posts to come!Kristin Cunninghamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07482281908080747324noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7104046739119633265.post-58749853530612828992011-08-19T17:47:00.000-07:002011-08-24T07:54:39.979-07:00Our Summer Thus FarThis summer has been quite full of activity. Its strange to think how close we are to the end. Time flies! Its even more strange to think that this is Kristin's LAST summer vacation. Next summer will be for EMT training and after that its off to PA school. Summer seems like the last tie to adolescence. Adults don't get summer vacations or spring breaks (unless you're a teacher...hmmm, career change?). It is exciting and scary all at once. Aaaanyways, here's a quick recap:
So it turns out we will NOT be moving this summer. Sadly, we had just signed a new lease at our current apartment just before receiving the offer from UCR Family Housing. We were so far down the list we had not anticipated being offered housing any time soon (Boy were we wrong!). Our apartment complex does not have a 'pay out' policy, and we would have had to pay for both places if our apartment was not taken over by anyone else. Our manager quickly started searching for a replacement. She found one, and we were SURE everything would work out, but it was not in the cards. Corporate did not approve the other renter for whatever reason, and we were left back at square one with no other biters on our place. The clock ticked away and we were forced say farewell to the dream of an outdoor space.

While we will sure miss those barbeque dreams, we were saved the hassle of having to move three times in three years (we would have had to leave as soon as Kristin graduated, and then again once when she gets accepted into a PA program). Instead, we'll put the energy into loving our first place and this summer together.Kristin Cunninghamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07482281908080747324noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7104046739119633265.post-48453648472066258302011-05-26T13:35:00.001-07:002011-05-26T13:37:22.109-07:00We're Moving
So after waiting for a year we finally got into ucr married student housing! down side is we just signed a new lease with our current place but we talked to our manager and if everything goes well we should be able to get out of our lease without paying a dime. so that will be nice. so without further adieu here is a picture of our soon to be new home.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7104046739119633265.post-71365635163183434742011-03-18T18:13:00.000-07:002011-03-18T18:13:15.112-07:00Turning 21March is a busy month for us. First its my birthday, followed by our anniversary two weeks later (always with finals in between), and capped off by Joseph's birthday (which is technically in April, but the first day so please let me fudge it for argument's sake). This year also included a visit from Joseph's trainer and his wife to bring us a little ice-blue Hyundai Accent. Such a manly car for Joseph to drive, right?

This year, being my 21st birthday and all, I wanted to have a mocktails-and-poker party (seeing as the only benefit Mormon 21 year-olds can really take advantage of is being able to buy our own cough syrup) and have a 'pretend' wild night of fun. Instead of a casino-themed party, I settled on a theme that would help cheer us up before finals: Colors! Plus, I had a cake idea in my back pocket that I had been dying to try. Saturday morning I got up early for a date with my Kitchen aid and whipped up a double batch of boxed white cake (I had good reason to cheat, I swear, just wait). I then divided the batter into six bowls:

{I think you can see where this is going}

And added some powdered food coloring which required quite a bit of stamina to properly mix in. I then spent the remainder of the morning rotating my two circle pans between the oven and my cooling station.

{Three cakes- please don't fall apart orange!}

I just wanted to pop in and shout out to my great husband who has made this birthday an amazing one, despite the fact I am stressed out by upcoming finals. This morning I woke up to a huge, heavy, blanket covered (we're a little low on wrapping paper) box for me to open. To my surprise (since we had agreed to keep the budget low) I found myself staring at a bright red Kitchen Aid stand mixer; my dream come true.

I had been hoping we could find a used one for cheap on craigslist and would never dream of buying one of these beauties new- but my husband did. Its the smaller model which is perfect (have you seen our apartment?), and is, well, perfect in every way. I can't wait to use it to make birthday cake for my 'friend-party' tomorrow and am excited to taste the oatmeal cake my husband made for me (google it, its not gross and oat-mealy I assure).

That's right- he made me a cake too, didn't I marry the best guy in the world (for me, all you ladies I am sure have great hubbies too)?! This, along with the sweet hand-made cards from my sister-in-law's family, has simply made this birthday great. Can't wait to see what else is in store. Toodles!

Although its already been a few months, I'll start with a quick recap of our first holidays together. Thanksgiving was a bit of a personal triumph as we were able to pull off a full spread (minus the delicious sweet potatoes grandma brought) in our tiny apartment. Thank you Alton Brown for imparting your turkey knowledge onto we first-timers! Ironically, the only thing that didn't work out was the boxed pumpkin pie- that'll teach us to attempt to take short cuts!
We had a skinny little Christmas tree (which I somehow managed to miss on all of our pictures) and a few strings of lights on our second story railing. We established a new Christmas Eve- Eve tradition of watching Muppets Christmas Carol (which I had never seen) with friends, and then moved on to Christmas Eve with my family. This year was slightly different because they chose to keep it a 'dry' Christmas, meaning no alcohol- needless to say Joseph was thrilled to 'get off easy'. Our favorite part was by far Christmas morning. Joseph was especially excited to finally rip the wrapping off the big box that had been taunting him for the past few weeks.

Ok, I just realized today how genius the people at Amazon are. This realization has been coming to fruition for a while, and, now that think about it, I am going to start from the beginning.

Kristin and I own two video game systems Ps2 and Gamecube (old, i know, but what can you do?) Now on PS2 we don't have the greatest multilayer games, which leaves us playing gamecube when we feel like playing together. On game cube we have 2 games (yes thats it): super smash brother mellee and mario kart double dash. Our normal game of choice is mario kart, and the problem with this is I owned the game before we were married. Therefore, i have logged the most hours played on it. You might ask why does that matter? Well it matters because 9 out of 10 times I will win the race. Now, I must say I am impressed with how much Kristin has improved; the games are getting closer. She leads most of the game a lot of the time, but i will usually manage to sneak in at the end and steal the victory away from her. Now here in lies the problem with us playing the game: No game is fun when you keep losing. On the flip side when Kristin beats me i feel robbed and that the game is rigged against me. To sum it up, this game frustrates us to no end. Now you might ask what does this have to do with amazon- i will tell you. Because of this frustration I have wanted to get a new game for us to play. Then I remembered mario party 7- a game neither of us has many hours on and we will be evenly matched. If it was at the store i would have to get in my car, drive to the store, find it, stand in line, buy it and drive home resulting in an hour of my life gone. So instead, I just logged onto amazon and had an order placed all within 1 minute. 1 MINUTE!! Sure I have to wait for shipping, but oh well I have other things to do for that week and a half. Now, on top of that I ordered it while sitting in econ class which I feel is appropriate. I am putting what i learn in micro econ into action. To finish up I have to say "Sorry honey for spending $20 dollars it all just happened so fast i didn't know what i was doing." :). Thank you amazon. (sorry for spelling errors i don't care enough to proof read this before i publish it.)
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7104046739119633265.post-22540852523654491082010-11-01T20:17:00.000-07:002010-11-01T20:25:34.369-07:00Halloween
The party

On Saturday we had a few friends over for a Halloween party. After the rejoicing subsided the question was raised, "Vacation?" Isn't the reply obvious?
We'd been craving a real vacation for some time- whether it be camping, visiting family, or what-have-you, but had simply been lacking in time with Joseph's work at the bank. So without further ado, we hopped on the internet and booked a hotel for our favorite beach location in SoCal- Laguna. The week-day vacation slashed prices for us, any further worries were eased Joseph received a bonus from USBank (which he hasn't worked at for the last six months). It seemed that the universe was on our side!
We enjoyed a day hopping around tide pools playing with little hermit crabs, eating South African seafood (slightly disappointed to be seated by a very drunk, very loud party) and Italian gelato, and relaxing in the hotel spa and heated pool (the day was too cool and windy for the beach). It was amazing to finally enjoy a vacation as a (tiny) family, even if it was in minature.
Well, more like a 'hot'. Her head-gasket needed to be replaced, which came with a hefty price-tag. Meanwhile, one of Joseph's co-workers had a $2,000 outage and was fired, so he picked up her hours in order to help compensate for our unexpected bill. It is quite fabulous how one door opens after another closes.
Joseph working full time put a bit of a damper on our summer plans (what plans?) but there was still plenty of fun to be had.
Living in SoCal (and with a self-professed 'water-child') makes us obligated to hit the waves. We headed back in July for a short fun trip, and again in August for the 'Super Trip'. We were in Huntington for ten hours, hanging with friends (including many of my old high school buds), boogie boarding and roasting s'mores when the sun went down. Ah the beach!

{After drying off and waiting for pizza to arrive}

Then came another trip to Disney after the summer black-out. Over the past few weeks we've enjoyed two trips to Disneyland (the first we've had over the last three months, a new record of separation since we've been together, I think):
For starters while trying to cook my first meal in the apartment (for another couple as well, mind you) the glass lid on the pan I was cooking in popped and shattered into a million tiny pieces (hello tempered glass). Luckily I was able to stay calm and salvage dinner, but needless to say I am adverse to that pan brand now. Then, yesterday I decided to toast myself a pita when I got home from school. I heard it pop up and looked over to the toaster only to see a five inch flame spewing out of it. Yes people, my toast literally caught on fire. Luckily I was able to blow on it enough to get the darn thing extinguished and save the toaster.

All of these shinanigans seem to occur whilst the husband is away, so I'm not sure if the apartment has an aversion to me or what. Regardless of the mishaps, Joseph and I are happy as can be and are enjoying the opportunities to laugh a little, even when the house smells like smoke.Kristin Cunninghamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07482281908080747324noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7104046739119633265.post-38531565553837394772010-02-16T14:22:00.000-08:002010-02-16T14:40:38.250-08:00Valentines Day!!!Well since valentines day was on a Sunday Kristin and I decided to celebrate on presidents day since we both had the day off. We started the day off in the most romantic way i could imagine..........meeting with my insurance agent and talking about rental and car insurance. well that pretty much tapped me out for romantic ideas so since we were in Huntington Beach we figured we would go visit the spot where we had our first kiss and became an "Official Couple".(see pictures below)

Okay so the sun was in our eyes on the first picture and i was taking the picture so that's my excuses for the bad picture.

After the beach we were getting a little hungry so after making many wrong turns we decided to stop at the very next place we saw. it ended up being Hong Kong Palace in Rowland Hights. now this place was amazing! First we were the only white people in there(always a good sign) second the Dim Sum was amazing! So thus ended our Valentines Day Adventure. Indeed, as we crawled out of the haze of finals and flew past the fabulous wedding of two of our closest friends (including the man who introduced the two of us- Thanks Steven!) we realized that there existed a mass of Christmasey things to be crammed into a one week pre-Christmas period.

First- a trip through an hour of henious LA traffic to the most beautifully decorated building in the city.

We then decided to take a stab and building a gingerbread house. In an attempt to kick it old school we bought a box of Gingi-mix (Joseph saved the day by finding some at our local Albertsons after our search together turned up cold) and built our house to massive scale:

And finally, to cap it all off, Christmas came! Joseph and I were on the same wavelength and both bought games for eachother (in addition to a few other things). We will never be bored at home, that's for certain! It was amazing to be able to spend this first Christmas together, and are both ecstatic for holiday season- round two. Only eleven months now!

And now I'll tip my hat and close with a picture of Ethne and Joseph- because really, you can't see that girl and not smile:
Still, on occasion (or pretty much everyday) I am led to wonder, how do all of these people pay for this? The food looks five star, the venue is lit like Christmas, the altar draped in flowers, all designed by a top-dollar planner and shot by photographers who have the prowess to make everything look possibly better than it did in reality (and receive paychecks to match). Now, thank goodness I am marrying into a family of photographers, and am a member of a religion that graciously provides gorgeous marriage locations free of rental fees, but even I have to sigh. When I email a discount bridal retailer for a bridesmaid dress quote and it comes back as $500 I can't help but cringe at this industry. And yet another side of me wonders if the old adage, "You get what you pay for" is really true.

Of course, there's also the adage, "The best things in life are free..."

The major wedding planning month is almost upon us, so I suppose time will only tell. Advice?Kristin Cunninghamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07482281908080747324noreply@blogger.com0
